Tips for improving a Spitfire Painting

Terry has sent me his painting of a Spitfire and has asked for my feedback as to how this painting could be improved.Terry's Spitfire Painting using Pastel PencilsWhen completing a subject like this using pastel pencils the main image has to be done first. In this case it was the plane first then the clouds later. This inevitably means that the pastel from the clouds would interfere with the subject and although Terry has done a great job of adding the clouds this way there are a couple of places that this has not worked out (see arrows). This problem is easily overcome though all it takes is a few sharp points of the appropriate pastel pencils to reinstate the edges of the wing. I would like to have seen some shading in the clouds, such as cool grey and ivory, as there is such an expanse of white. Either that or add little more land showing beneath them. But as I say this is a good picture and Terry should be delighted with the results. If you would like to learn to draw a spitfire using pastel pencils, learn about Colin's exclusive membership where you can access this course and many others.
